Pond 5

General Information:

This large ‘double ended cart pond’ is situated alongside Cliff Road on public access land owned by the Longleat Estate at OS grid reference ST48698 53437.

Silt  removal  was  carried  out  during  the  autumn  of  2017  after  which  the  pond  was  left  until  the  spring  of  2018  when  temperatures  were  once  again  high  enough  to  allow  the  use  of  lime  mortar.  The  greatest  complication  this  pond  presented  was  draining  it.  It  sits  neatly  at  the  lowest  point  in  the  surrounding  landscape  making  a  syphon  impossible  to  use,  and  even  with  a  pump  it  requires  a  vast  length  of  pipe  to  carry  the  water  far  enough  away  from  the  pond  to  prevent  it  simply  draining  back  in.  Draining  of  the  pond  was  undertaken  regularly  during  the  early  part  of  spring  2018  to  discourage  newts  from  entering  it  before  the  stone  works  began.
