History

Winscombe`s toads make their perilous journey, during February and March under cover of darkness, from their hibernation sites in the woodland bordering Winscombe Hill and Church Road to their ancestral breeding ponds lower down.

Significance

This toad population is significant being the largest in the Mendips, if not in the whole of the county.

2017 was the most prolific when approximately 2000 toads were rescued. Tragically since then there has been a national decline of 60%, which is reflected in the number we are collecting on the roads, influenced by the enormous increase in traffic.
